Why is it important to have machines calibrated?

Having your welding equipment calibrated on a regular basis is essential to the longevity of its life span, its ability to operate at maximum capacity, and its delivery of consistent welding results. If your company have BS or ISO quality standard procedures, or you are working towards a CE accreditation, you are required to have your welding equipment calibrated regularly.

What can be calibrated?

Any welding power source that is fitted with an undamaged AMP and Volt meter can be calibrated, including MIG Machines, TIG Machines, MMA Machines and Submerged Arc Machines.

Machines without digital meters, but with controls marked with scales indicating Amps/Volts can still be tested. This test is called a ‘Validation’ but still results in a valid certificate if successful.

However, we do recommend fitting a new digital meter kit to machines without digital meters as this ensures a full calibration can be carried out and in the future welders can follow the meter readouts when performing specific weld procedures.

How do we calibrate welding equipment?

Calibrating involves welding machines being connected to a calibration station to have their voltage, amperage, and wire feed speed measured. These measurements are compared to the specifications set out by the British European standard (BS EN 50504 : 2008) ‘Validation of arc welding equipment’.

Upon completion you will receive a certificate for each calibration, which is valid for 12 months, along with a copy of our Engineers qualification certificate and our calibrator machine certificate, for your records.

Our team will contact you around 1 month before your next annual calibration is due to ensure you always remain compliant. Our JWS engineer is fully qualified to carry out Calibrations at your premises or ours. It’s a relatively quick process which involves minimal disruption to your normal working day.

What if my machine fails the tests?

If the equipment fails, our engineer will discuss with you what is needed for it to pass.

If the meters that are already fitted to your machine do not work, are damaged, are inaccurate or fail the calibration test we will replace the faulty meters & fit one
of our new digital meter kits.

A machine can fail calibration if internal or external components are faulty, so it pays to have the machine checked over & serviced before carrying out calibrations. It is also a good idea to have your machines serviced at least once a year anyway to avoid unnecessary build up of metallic dust particles within the machine which can cause faults.

We recommend that you arrange for all your machines to be serviced and calibrated at the same time as this saves money and travel costs.
